Jefferson County Public Schools has filed an asbestos abatement permit to remove floor tile and associated adhesive mastic from Exits 20 and 44 at Fern Creek High School, 9115 Fern Creek Rd. The project is scheduled for June 16–July 31, 2026, and will be performed by RH Environmental using non‑friable, wet‑method removal with HEPA vacuuming; waste will be sealed and sent to WM – Outer Loop Landfill. The work is prompted by tile beginning to lose adhesion, and crews have trained supervisors on site with a contingency plan to secure the area and notify officials if additional asbestos-containing materials are found.
